‘Man Utd No.10’ again in summer transfer window

‘Aberrant’ but popular.

“Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) could make another attempt to sign Marcus Rashford this summer,” the UK’s Eyenews reported on July 31 (KST).

Marcus Rashford is Manchester United’s number 10. While most people think of the number 7 as the iconic number of Manchester United, the number 10 has also been worn by some of the club’s biggest stars, including Dennis Law, Mark Hughes, David Beckham (who later switched to the number 7), Teddy Sheringham, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and Wayne Rooney.

After joining the Manchester United youth team in 2005, Rashford worked his way up through the ranks and made his professional debut for the Red Devils in 2016. In his first season, the 2015-2016 season, he scored five goals and provided two assists in 11 league games. He inherited the number 10 jersey after Wayne Rooney left the team.

Rashford scored his first double-digit league goal since his professional debut in the 2018-2019 season. He followed that up with 17 goals in the 2019-2020 season.

Rashford continued to perform well in 2022-2023, scoring another 17 goals in the league, but in 2023-2024, he hit a slump. He only scored four goals in 20 league games.

Rashford, who has been a force for good and the face of United’s “good life” image, has also been having problems in his personal life.

“Rashford spent the night before training in Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, and missed training the following day, on Friday, citing illness,” according to the British publication The Athletic.

According to the outlet, United reportedly failed to keep Rashford under control. In fact, The Athletic went on to reveal that “Rashford was reported to have enjoyed a night out in Belfast on Wednesday, but we can confirm he was at the club on Thursday night, just hours before training was due to start.”

This is where PSG’s interest in Rashford comes in. “PSG made a bid for Rashford last summer, but it fell through. However, according to PSG sources, the club could make a new offer for the player again this summer.”

“While Rashford’s signing is not seen as a top priority, United could sell several players, including Mason Greenwood, due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules,” the publication said.

Of course, PSG were aware of Rashford’s poor form. “With four league goals this season, Rashford needs to improve his goal-scoring form before the end of the season in order to attract more offers,” explained Eyenews.

“PSG are thinking about a replacement for Kylian Mbappe, who is a longtime fan of Rashford and could leave for Real Madrid. A source close to the club said PSG would be looking to sign a young, hungry prospect rather than a big-name player after Mbappe’s departure.”

However, a move for Rashford seems unlikely. “United have no intention of selling the out-of-favor player, and Rashford is also not thinking about leaving the club and finding a new team,” the publication added.
