The Doosan Bears pulled off a dramatic come-from-behind victory to move to 30 wins.

Doosan came from behind to win 7-5 against the Kia Tigers of the 2024 Baseball Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) SOL Bank Baseball League at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field on Thursday. After surrendering five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 3-0 lead, Yang Ji-hyun hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the top of the ninth and Kim Jae-hwan hit a game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.

Kia staged a dramatic comeback in the eighth inning with Lee Woo-sung’s three-run homer and Socrates’ walk-off solo shot, but Jung Hae-young and Jang Hyun-sik collapsed in the bottom of the ninth inning to suffer a heartbreaking fourth straight loss.

Doosan capitalized on its chances in the first inning. In the top of the first inning, Jeon Min-jae and Kang Seung-ho led off with back-to-back singles. In the second inning, Yang Seok-hwan hit a deflected ball that landed in front of the right fielder for a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the second inning, Cho Sung-soo singled to center, stole second and came home on Jeon Min-jae’s infield single to make it 2-0.

In the third inning, Kim Jae-hwan drew a fastball from Hwang Dong-ha for a leadoff single. The pitch was in the middle of the plate in a full count, and Doosan’s offense was relentless, scoring all three runs in the second inning. It was enough to win the game, as starter Kwak Bin was pitching powerfully.

The KIA bats were lethargic. In the bottom of the first inning, Park Chan-ho reached first base on an error by the shortstop and tried to steal second, but Kim Do-young and Na Sung-beom struck out and Park failed to steal. In the third inning, Kim Sun-bin doubled, but Han Jun-soo, Choi Won-joon, and Park Chan-ho were thrown out at the plate. In the seventh, they had the bases loaded, but Kim Tae-gun grounded out to shortstop.

With the deficit deep, the eighth inning saw Kwak Bin go down and Kim Taek-yeon come up. He struck out eight batters in the seventh inning, allowing just three hits and no walks. It was his best pitching performance of the year, but the victory was lost in the eighth inning when Kim collapsed. Hong Gun-hee pitched a scoreless ninth inning to complete the comeback.

Kia starter Hwang Dong-ha did his job, allowing three runs on seven hits (one home run) with one walk and three strikeouts in five innings. After Kwak Do-gyu in the sixth, Kim Do-hyun pitched two scoreless innings. After a five-run eighth inning, Jeong Jung-young came on to pitch the ninth but gave up the tying two-run homer to blow the save. Jang Hyun-sik gave up a two-run homer and took the loss.
