The Hanwha Eagles of the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) used a hot bat to improve their chances of escaping last place.
Hanwha won 7-5 against SSG Landers in the 2024 Shinhan Bank SOL Bank KBO League on Thursday at SSG Landers Field in Incheon, South Korea.
Hanwha, which is looking to escape the bottom of the standings, started its lineup with Kim Tae-yeon (right fielder), Jang Jin-hyuk (center fielder), Noh Si-hwan (third baseman), Ahn Chi-hong (designated hitter), Chae Eun-sung (first baseman), Lee Do-yoon (shortstop), Choi In-ho (left fielder), Moon Hyun-bin (second baseman), and Choi Jae-hoon (catcher). The Hanwha bats pounded the SSG mound with 12 hits and three home runs on the day. Chae Eun-sung bounced back with her third home run of the season, going 3-for-4 with a double, one home run, one RBI, and one run scored, while Kim Tae-yeon (5) and Noh Si-hwan (10) also hit home runs. Choi Jae-hoon had a multi-hit game.
Starter Cho Dong-wook struggled a bit, allowing five runs on seven hits, one walk and two wild pitches in 3⅔ innings with four strikeouts. The bullpen of Kim Kyu-yeon (1⅔ scoreless innings), Kim Bum-soo (1⅔ scoreless innings), Lee Min-woo (1 scoreless inning), and Joo Hyun-sang (1 scoreless inning) preserved the win. Joo earned his fifth save of the season.
SSG started Park Sung-sung (shortstop), Choi Ji-hoon (center fielder), Choi Jung (third baseman), Guillermo Heredia (designated hitter), Han Yoo-seom (right fielder), Lee Ji-young (catcher), Go Myung-joon (first baseman), Ha Jae-hoon (left fielder), and Ahn Sang-hyun (second baseman). Choi Ji-hoon, Lee Ji-young, and Ha Jae-hoon had multi-hit games and Go Myung-joon had a two-run double, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the team from losing.
Starter Drew Anderson took the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits (two homers) in four innings with one walk and nine strikeouts. The bullpen of Lee I-roon (1 1/3 scoreless innings), Noh Kyung-eun (1 1/3 scoreless innings), Han Doo-sol (1 1/3 scoreless innings), and Cho Byung-hyun (1 scoreless inning) battled back, but it was not enough to save the team. With the loss, SSG fell to its first five-game losing streak of the season.
SSG opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a leadoff single by Park Sung-yi. Ji-hoon Choi then struck out and Park advanced to second on a pitcher’s walk. However, Choi struck out and Heredia grounded out to second to end the threat.
Hanwha put runners on first and third with no outs in the top of the second when leadoff hitters Ahn Chi-hong and Chae Eun-sung hit back-to-back singles. Hanwha got one back in the top of the third when Noh Si-hwan led off with a solo home run. A walk to Ahn Chi-hong and a single by Chae Eun-sung put runners on first and second with no outs, and Lee Do-yoon struck out, but Choi In-ho walked to put runners on first and third. Choi In-ho then stole second, but Moon Hyeon-bin struck out to end the threat.
SSG got on the board in the bottom of the third when leadoff hitter Choi Ji-hoon singled and stole second. However, Choi and Heredia were both hit by pitches and Han Yoo-seom grounded out to shortstop to end the threat with no runs scored. In the fourth inning, however, Lee Ji-young led off with a single and Go Myung-joon struck out, but Ha Jae-hoon and pinch-hitter Kang Jin-sung followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. From there, starter Cho Dong-wook’s pitches started to falter and he eventually gave up a run on a catcher’s foil. SSG got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Ha Jae-hoon led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Choi Kyung-mo. Park Sung-seong drew a walk, but Choi Ji-hoon singled to put runners on second and third, and Choi Jeong-jeong flied out to center field to tie the game.
Hanwha got one run back in the top of the seventh inning when Chae Eun-sung hit a solo home run.
SSG had one last chance in the bottom of the ninth when Choi Ji-hoon singled, Choi Jung walked, and Heredia singled. With the bases loaded, Han Yoo-seom struck out and Lee Ji-young grounded out to end the game.
