Super Race Day 4-5 Double Round… Lee Chan-joon to become ‘Youngest Champion’

‘Driver born in 2002’ Lee Chan-joon (XStar Racing) will attempt to become the youngest ever champion in the Super 6000 class at the 2023 CJ Logistics Super Race, Korea’s premier motorsports event.

This year’s Super Race will conclude its season with the final seven or eight rounds on April 4-5 at Everland Speedway in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.

All eyes will be on the youngest ever champion in the Super 600 class, the top class of the Superleague.

Through six rounds, Lee has accumulated 113 driver’s standings points based on his three victories, leading second-place Kim Jae-hyun (Nexen-Volgas Motorsports-85 points) by 28 points.

He’s practically over the top of the season’s eight-peat, but he can’t let his guard down.

At any point in the race, an unfortunate incident could cause him to retire and lose points.

Lee needs to win one of the two remaining races, or at least 33 points from the two races combined, to be crowned season champion.

Second-ranked Kim Jae-hyun needs to win both remaining races to earn a maximum of 145 ranking points (30 points per round) and hope for a “slip-up” by Lee.

If Lee, 21, is crowned ‘Driver’s Champion’ this season, he will break the existing record for the youngest rider in the Super 6000 class (27), which was set by Kim Jong-gyeom (AtrasBX Motorsport) when he was crowned champion in 2018.

The only thing standing in his way heading into rounds seven and eight is the handicap weight.

After securing his third win of the season at Round 6, Lee will have to carry a whopping 100 kilograms of handicap weight in his car for Round 7.

Instead of pushing himself too hard in Round 7, Lee plans to reduce his handicap weight in Round 8 to make a final push for the win.

After winning Round 6, Lee said, “I’m going to take the weight off in Round 7 and compete in Round 8.”

With third-placed Lee Chang-wook (Xtar Racing – 73 points) and fourth-placed Jang Hyun-jin (Seohan GP – 70 points) also hoping to pull off a last-minute upset, the two-day ‘double race’ of Rounds 7 and 8 will be as intense as ever.

The moment of the ‘birth of a champion’ can be seen on the host broadcasters Channel A, Channel A+, and tvN SPORTS. 먹튀검증
